Tonga Kava Culture


In tonga kava is a night at the ''club'' it is also called ''to do kava.'' The only person that can drink kava is men,the woman will serve the kava. The women who serve the kava is an unmarried young lady who called tou'a. If one of the men known a lady ,the lady will be ask to leave for the night. the kava is serve in coconut cups ,in rounds. Whan it is being pass from hand to hand to the ones who are far to the back. Whan everybody is seating cross-legged. The men talk about sport,trading,culture,jokes,and anything else,or they will sing love song by a guitar.In most of the other outer islands of tonga, the kava is drunk mostly every night. On the main island Tongatpu the kava is drunk only on wednesday and saturday night. Kava lasts for eight or nine hours. On occasions kava is also drinking like:weddings, funerals, and when a new king takes the throne or a new chief.kava is prepared by pounding the roots to powder,then once it is the right stength the ceremony master will call out the nickname of the first recipient using an old formula (kava kuo heka).
